9781492270300: Repeating History: A Time in Yellowstone Novel

It was only a geyser

In 1959, 20-year-old college dropout Chuck McManis strolls the geyser boardwalks in Yellowstone National Park when an earthquake plunges him eighty years back in time, into the middle of an Indian war.

Into his personal past, too - his great-grandfather, his boyhood idol, but not a hero after all.

Hapless Chuck needs instructions for sheer survival. He will not abandon Eliza Byrne, the woman who teaches him. But nothing matters if they never make it back to civilization. No matter when it could be.

REPEATING HISTORY is a novel that spans several genres. Though it features time travel and is quite readable as a romance set in 1870s Wyoming and Montana, it is primarily a historical adventure and could even be considered the beginning of a family saga, which is continued in the sequels, TRUE GOLD, HOMESICK, and FINDING HOME.

From the Back Cover:

The moon gleamed on the pool under the boardwalk, the ripples growing into small waves as the vibrations magnified. A splash, another splash, this one bigger than the first, a chugging racket that sounded like the propellers on an airplane about to take off...

The earthquake, it had to be an earthquake, hit like a giant pounding a sledgehammer. The boardwalk - bounced. With me on it. It was like riding a bucking bronco. I grabbed the edge of the boards, and hung on. Grand's pool was churning like a crazy thing now. Water hit me on the back, the heat soaking through my jacket and shirt.

Then it all stopped.

"That was a helluva ride," I said into the suddenly still darkness, the moon glimmering off the still sloshing pool. My thumb hurt. I held it up a few inches from my nose. A splinter was lodged under the nail. I grasped it between my teeth and yanked it out. Tugged the tail of my shirt out to stanch the blood. And stared around.

Everything seemed to be holding its breath. Not a bit of movement, except the water draining under my feet. Not a sound, except for the now-fading hiss of the runoff. I took a deep breath and started to get up.

That's when the big one hit.

About the Author:

M.M. Justus's first visit to Yellowstone National Park was at age four, where it snowed on the Fourth of July.  She spent most of her childhood summers in the back seat of a car, traveling with her parents to almost every national park west of the Mississippi and a great many places in between. She holds degrees in British and American literature and history and library science, and a certificate in museum studies.  In her other life, she works as an independent museum curator, and finds museums a great source of stories of all kinds.
