9781492330967: Running from Giants: The Holocaust Through The Eyes of a Child

Combining prose with powerful imagery, Running from Giants follows a young boy's struggle to survive in Nazi occupied Europe, from the forests where he and his brothers once happily played, to the horrors of the ghetto. While the narrative propels us through Srulik's gripping true story, the black-and-white art reveals his journey through the imagination of a child caught in a land of giants.

The story opens with Srulik Ackerman enjoying a peaceful childhood in the Polish town of Nowosiolki, until the Nazi whirlwind blows in leaving ten-year-old Srulik suddenly and brutally alone. An eyewitness to the horrors of the Holocaust, Srulik narrowly escapes death several times, only to make a final desperate bid for freedom during a fiery revolt in the ghetto.

Margareta Ackerman was astonished when she learned that her grandfather, Srulik, was a Holocaust survivor. How had he overcome the past with his cheerful attitude and timeless smile intact? In Running from Giants, she retells his amazing story, with its profound message about the incredible strength of the human spirit.

From the Author:

Dear readers,

This book is the true story of my grandfather, Srulik, who survived the Nazi atrocities when he was only ten years old.  On Nov 18, 2013, I was just about to call Grandpa to conduct another interview with him when a note appeared in my inbox: "Call me within the next ten minutes," wrote my cousin, "you need to say goodbye to Grandpa."

Tears flooded my face. Gathering all my strength, I recomposed myself. After a few long minutes during which I tried desperately to get a hold of my cousin, I finally got through. Then, I said goodbye to the most incredible person I have ever met. He was so sick that he could not even reply.

For a while, this left me at a complete loss. I wrote this book while he was still alive. Our frequent conversations during the creation and publication of this book were at the heart of my life. Now he was gone. I wasn't sure how to deal with it.

A few weeks later, clarity finally came. After his death, I realized how critical it is that the world hears his story, as well as the stories of other survivors. Too soon, there will be no eyewitnesses left. It is up to us to keep their story alive.

While the need to preserve Grandpa's story has always been the main reason I wrote this book, there is yet another purpose. Grandpa wasn't anything like what I would have expected from a Holocaust survivor. Of my four grandparents, all of whom I loved dearly, he was the most cheerful. In fact, he was, without a doubt, the happiest person that I have ever met. My personal reason for writing this book was to understand how he managed to survive so wholly.

I hope that you find strength and inspiration in his memoir.

Yours truly,

Margareta Ackerman
