9781493564439: The Infant Priest: Hymns and Poems

The poems and hymns in this collection give voice to the triumphs and tragedies of life in a broken world. Here there is praise of the crucified and risen Christ, dark lamentation of a penitent wrestling with despair, meditations upon the life of our Lord, thanksgiving for the gift of family, and much more. Using the vivid and earthy language of the Scriptures themselves, Chad Bird crafts poetry by which believers who rejoice, weep, struggle, and hope can speak to God with honesty and fidelity.

About the Author:

Every poet pens at least part of his autobiography between the lines of his work. The words on the page and the events in his life mirror each other. In “The Infant Priest Was Holy Born,” I see the young, zealous student at Concordia Theological Seminary (CTS), while in “Spooning with the Ghost,” I view the heartbroken, anguished man for whom hope was a fleeting shadow as he went through the throes of a divorce. Behind every hymn in this collection there is a story. The poems, likewise, are verbal snapshots of times and events and people in my life. While serving as a Lutheran pastor in Wellston, Oklahoma, and later as a professor of the Old Testament at CTS, many opportunities arose for the writing of hymns, such as weddings, ordinations, funerals, congregational anniversaries, and baptisms. Most of the poetry, however, came later, through several years of internal warfare between faith and doubt, hope and despair. Although Christ has since raised me from the pit of depression in which I found myself, I have chosen to include a few of the darker poems I composed during those years. I believe such laments are a helpful component in the process of healing. I live in San Antonio, Texas, with my wife, Stacy, and am an active member of Crown of Life Lutheran Church. In addition to my hymns and poems, I have contributed articles to the Lutheran Witness, Gottesdienst, Concordia Journal, Concordia Theological Quarterly, Modern Reformation, Concordia Pulpit Resources, Logia, Higher Things, and The Federalist. I am currently revising and expanding a collection of my sermons, titled Christ Alone, which will be published in the near future. Some of my hymns and poems have appeared on my blog, “Flying Scroll” at birdchadlouis.wordpress.com.
