Book 3 of Tribe of the Jaguar continues the story of Anani, her life, her tribe and her continuing struggle to convince Lorinda Mayfield, her last remaining descendant to continue their family line. As in the two previous books of this saga, Anani reaches out to Lorinda with dreams and trinkets that affirm her real existence even though her physical self died centuries before.  But now she adds more to the mix, appearing outside the dreamstate and to others besides Lorinda.  How far will she go to win immortality for her lineage?  Islands of the Pearls, Tribe of the Jaguar Book 3 -  Caribbean Amerindian genre that brings to life the beliefs of these ancient people, their dedication to family and tribe as well as the minutae of their everyday existence - a compelling window into the past that shaped their world and ours today.

From the Author:

Islands of the Pearls addresses the time when great wealth began to cross the sea from the New World to Spain. It lays before the reader the horror of exploitation visited upon the island of Cubagua, Venezuela, deserted now but for a lighthouse and the ruins of Nueva Cádiz.  It was a source of the greatest find in natural pearls ever discovered before or since, as the portraits painted of the Spanish from this period, dripping with ropes of them festooned about their arms, ears and necks, clearly show.  Greed for the pearls caused great misery to be visited upon the native population, killing them off in short order by overwork and neglect. Soon others were enslaved and brought from Africa to step into their place. Yet there was a dignity that lived on deep in the jungles where a few fled or hid, far from the sea that brought the foreigners. And this pride of heritage and continuing survival is the focus awaiting your perusal.

From the Back Cover:

Sometimes you just sweep things under the carpet and hope they go away. Is this what happened to the people who Columbus found among the islands of the Caribbean and along the northern coastline of South America? They and their part in history have been lost to us, our attention diverted by the greater drama and excitement of the Spanish ships bravely forging west in their search for the Orient and its spices. What the Spanish found - this piece of paradise inhabited by the descendants of the Arawaks - became the most hotly-contested place on earth - a New World - whose peoples were annihilated in less than half a century by the newcomers who enslaved and murdered them in the most overt, callous search for gold, silver and pearls that has ever graced the pages of history under the guise of exploration. For those who care to remember the people who met Columbus - almost naked, their bodies dyed against the sun with the juice of annatto and called by him "redskins", for those Caribbean peoples whose eyes turn back now in search of the stabilizing anchors of aboriginal origin, for those who wondered 'Where did they go, those gentle people who welcomed Columbus?' and for those who seek the fantasy of another time and place where one heart succumbs to the call of another and where love blossoms most vigorously under the hot sun of the tropics - for you there is Islands of the Pearls, Tribe of the Jaguar Book 3. It continues the story of Anani of the Jaguar, her life and her tribe. May you read and say, 'By my understanding these people are not lost but live again through my knowing.'
