Morton received her formal training from the New York Theological Seminary and the University of Geneva. She has had a rich and varied career working for civil rights in the South, teaching at the Theological School of Drew University and lecturing throughout the U.S. and the world. The first theologian to teach a university course on women, theology, and language, she has been awarded honorary degrees from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and from Drew University for her early work in peace and human rights and more recently for her leadership in women's liberation and the church.
