About the Author:

About the Author Carolyn Wells American author Carolyn Wells (1862 – 1942) was a writer and poet who published more than 100 books and stories. She was born in Rahway, New Jersey and married Hadwin Houghton, the heir of the Houghton-Mifflin publishing empire. After finishing school she worked as a librarian and published her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896). During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor and children's books. But after she heard "That Affair Next Door" (1897), one of Anna Katharine Green's mystery novels, being read aloud she was immersed in unraveling the puzzle. From then on, she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories. In addition to books, Wells wrote for newspapers. Her poetry accompanies the work of some of the leading lights in illustration and cartooning, often in the form of Sunday magazine cover features. She died in New York in 1942.
