For most of us, running away to sea with a gorgeous man is an escapist’s dream, but Di did it and has written a page-turning account of her adventures. She and Rod explore wild coasts in West Africa, sail across oceans, meet extraordinary people and produce two beautiful, fearless little girls on the way. Her book – funny, informative, passionate and poignant – has all the makings of a best seller.

Hybrid daughter of an American mother and English father who were undecided where to live, Di Beach crossed the Atlantic four times by the age of ten. These early experiences are probably responsible for awakening her innate itinerant tendency. It would also explain why she turned her back on Oxford in favour of marrying architect Rod Pickering and enduring the pelagic adventures described in the “The Ocean Voyager and Me”. Rod and Di married in Uganda where he had his first job. Their daughter was born in Kampala and, at the end of Rod's tour, they built an ocean-going yacht with the dhow builders of Lamu. They voyaged for five years, adding a second daughter in South Africa. Some years later, Rod disappeared under strange circumstances while crossing the Atlantic. He was missing presumed dead but Di and her two daughters' lives were severely disrupted when an anonymous telephone call informed them that he was still alive. Nothing is known and the mystery is unsolved. Di lived in San Francisco for fifteen years after Rod disappeared. She tried a corporate career but failed miserably. Remembering what she had forgotten to do in her rush to explore the world, she applied to the University of California at Berkeley to study anthropology, her fieldwork having been completed in her youth. Accepted by this illustrious house of learning, she gained the highest possible honour and was elected to the ranks of the Phi Beta Kappa but didn't bother to pick up the key. But Di had inadvertently left her heart years before in Andalucia and she returned there in 2001. In search of traditional Spain and a suitable place to build her vision of a small boutique hotel, she chose a tiny mountain pueblo blanco with no foreign residents. In 2006 she had the good fortune to be reunited with her childhood sweetheart and they are living happily ever after, running the highly-acclaimed hotel, inspired by their varied clientèle, and enjoying the clash of cultures it creates.
