As part of Girl Scout Troop 3278’s Silver Star project, we wrote this Shepherd Canyon Plant Guide. It has color photos and detailed information on 40 plants commonly found in Southern California and San Diego canyon, sage scrub, and chaparral habitats. The first 20 plants in the guide are native Californian plants, and accompany a Native Plant Trail that was created in East Shepherd Canyon, in Tierrasanta, California. Posts identifying and briefly describing 20 native plants were placed along the first 1/5 of a mile of the trail into East Shepherd Canyon, beginning near the corner of Santo Road and Antigua Boulevard. The other 20 plants in the guide are native and non-native plants that are commonly found in Southern Californian canyons. Our troop hopes this guide will help interested canyon adventurers in San Diego and beyond learn about the native and non-native plants in our area. More information about the girls' Silver Star project can be found on their blog, at shootingforsilverstars.wordpress.com.
