About the Author

Walter Lock was born at Dorchester, Dorsetshire, on July 14, 1846. He was educated at Marlborough College and Corpus Christi, Oxford, and was fellow of Magdalen College (1869-72), where he was also honorary fellow after 1897. Lock was assistant to the professor of humanity at St. Andrews (1869-70), tutor of Keble College, Oxford (1870-97), subwarden (1880-97) and then warden. After 1895 he became Dean Ireland's professor of the exegesis of Holy Scripture at Oxford, examining chaplain to the bishop of Lichfield (1881-91) and of the archbishop of York (after 1891). Lock served as examiner in the Honor School of Theology in 1885-87 and select preacher to the university (1889-90). He was appointed Lady Margaret professor of divinity at Oxford and canon of Christ Church, where he remained until he died in 1933. Lock wrote on a number of scripture and other popular topics. He published "The Pastoral Epistles" for the International Critical Commentary series, and other works related to the Bible. He wrote a crucial work on the "'Sayings of Jesus' recently discovered at Oxyrhynchus."

William Sanday was born at Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire, on August 1, 1843. He was educated at Balliol College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, ordered deacon in 1867, and ordained priest two years later. He had a long list of appointments: fellow of Trinity College, Oxford (1866-73), lecturer of St. Nicholas, Abingdon (1871-72), vicar of Great Waltham, Chelmsford (1872-73), rector of Barton-on-the-Heath, Warwickshire (1873-76), principal of Hatfield Hall, Durham (1876-83), Dean Ireland's professor of the exegesis of Holy Scripture at Oxford, and tutorial fellow of Exeter College, Oxford (1883-95). From 1895 to 1919 he was Lady Margaret professor of divinity and canon of Christ Church. He served as examining chaplain to the bishop of Durham (1879-81), as select preacher at Cambridge (1880, 1892, 1903) and Whitehall (1889-90), and Bampton lecturer in 1893. Sanday was one of the original fellows of the British Academy (1903) and became chaplain in ordinary to the king. A prolific writer, he specialized in the gospels, life of Christ, and patristics. He died on September 16, 1920.
