Gr 3–5—This series looks at potentially dangerous animals, most of which are not typically thought of as threats to humans. Early pages provide a general introduction, while the second half describes why these creatures are so frightening. Facts are presented clearly and typically include, with range maps, explanations of species variety, physical characteristics, and basic behaviors. Full-page photos on each spread add some visual appeal, though only a few are especially engaging. Additional information appears in word balloons with a "Surprisingly True" label; some of these factoids are fascinating, while others are merely standard data. Treatment of each subject's dangerous traits is generally effective, with explanations of how the creature presents a threat, why this helps its survival, and how humans can stay safe. Only Mosquitoes indicates how often the animal harms people; others leave that unclear. VERDICT Solid but unexciting overviews.—Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville Public Library, OR
