Keri Fields is only seven years old when she learns the reason for her mother's sickness. She has seen firsthand how badly her mother feels when she is sick. Keri listens carefully as her mother tells her about a boo-boo called cancer that is causing her to be sick enough to throw up and tired enough to lie down often. To help explain the things that will happen while her mother is being treated by the doctor, Keri's parents present her with a very special gift. Keri quickly discovers this is no ordinary gift! Imagine you have been diagnosed with cancer.

Now, imagine how you would go about explaining your diagnosis to a young child. Wiggy Wanda is a children's book that will help open the door for women everywhere to begin to tell their personal stories to the young children in their lives - perhaps even their daughters.

From the Author:

Wiggy Wanda is easy-to-read story about a mother with cancer, who along with her spouse, finds a unique way to tell their young daughter about her sickness and some of the things that may occur during her treatment.

Each year thousands of adults find themselves in a position to tell their loved ones they have a serious illness such as cancer.  This is never easy, but it is especially difficult when one is faced with telling children.

My family is no stranger to cancer.  Wiggy Wanda was written after my Aunt Brenda Sue Scott passed in 2006, following an eight-year battle with breast cancer.  I spoke with Brenda often about the side effects of medications taken to treat cancer and other things that could occur during one's journey to be well, including hair loss. One evening as Brenda and I were talking, my eight-year old daughter Rana asked her if she could have her wig when she passed.  Brenda laughed kindheartedly as she snatched the gray-ratty wig from her head, handing it to Rana.  "Don't wait until I'm gone-- enjoy it now!" she said, giving Rana the wig and a big hug.  Rana treasured the wig and played with it often, but when she wasn't playing with it, she would park it on her doll's head at the foot of her bed.

After Brenda's passing, I began to think about how parents might have conversations with children to explain serious illnesses.  It was the conversations I had had with Brenda and the gift of her wig to Rana that inspired me to write Wiggy Wanda and to create a Wiggy Wanda doll.

Wiggy Wanda is not meant to be an authority on cancer.  I simply hope Wiggy Wanda will help to spark conversation between adults and children about the symptoms, treatments, and fears associated with cancer or other serious illnesses.

From the Inside Flap:

This book is dedicated to Mrs. Brenda Sue Scott.  Brenda's courageous eight-year battle with breast cancer was testimony to her perseverance and faith.  Brenda often said she would one day receive a divine healing, and she did.  Mrs. Brenda Sue Scott ~ March 31, 1943-June 21, 2006. - Kathy Mashburn, Author
"Wiggy Wanda is a wonderful little children's book written for anyone who has or knows a child whose loved one is going through cancer therapy. It is written by Kathy Mashburn in memory of her beloved aunt, Brenda Sue Scott who was also a special and dear patient of mine. For 8 years, Brenda bravely fought her cancer with good humor and kindness and love toward others. She inspired all who knew her. Best of all, she will continue to help and love families dealing with cancer by providing the inspiration for this book.

Wiggy Wanda provides a sensitive and wonderful resource that can be used to comfort little ones who need help understanding and coping with the often frightening side effects of chemotherapy. With tenderness and imagination, Kathy Mashburn shows us all how to allow a child to understand and participate in her parent's illness. Toward the end of the book, little Keri is overjoyed at having her fears assuaged: "I cannot wait to show my friends," she said. "I have the coolest Mom in the whole world, and I cannot wait until you go bald," she said as she pulled a new wig onto Wiggly Wanda's little bald head." Brenda is surely smiling down from heaven." - Therese Maxwell, M. D., Medical Oncology
"I just love this!  I cried when I read it because my little granddaughter Emily took my temperature, listened to my heart, gave me shots, bandages, and kisses to make me better during my battle." - Brinda Lawless Baker, Cancer Survivor, Dalton, GA

"Wiggy Wanda is a touching story that really hit close to home in my life.  I really wish that we would have had a book like this when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2000.  Even though I was barely 15 at the time, my sisters were 13 and 8 years old.  None of us really understood what cancer meant, nor were we prepared for what was to come.  The way Kathy Mashburn explains cancer in Wiggy Wanda makes it easier for young children to understand. I believe Wiggy Wanda has the potential to help and comfort many children who are facing the reality of cancer in their own loved ones.
My mom would have loved Wiggy Wanda because she brings understanding and an aspect of fun into cancer for children.  Every girl loves to play with dolls and change their clothes, so what girl wouldn't like to be able to change a doll's hair?  I know my sisters and I would have enjoyed this book very much.
Thank you, Kathy Mashburn for having a heart to help children who have loved ones facing cancer by writing this book for them. It is creative, unique, and informative all at the same time." - Katie Kinnamon Peeples, Daughter of the late Mrs. Beverly Kinnamon, Dalton, GA

"For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds," saith the LORD. - Jeremiah 30:17 KJV
