This book offers literal translations of the 24 songs that were edited by Dr Theodore Baker in the famous Schirmer edition, first published in 1894. They are designed to give student singers a better insight into the songs than those provided by Baker’s English paraphrases, which were intended to be sung in place of the original Italian. It includes many popular Italian songs of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Composers include Caldara, Carissimi, Gluck, Monteverdi and Scarlatti.
