Collecting "Gay Teenage Wasteland" and "Lust=Death, Kiddies!" At nineteen, I had a one night stand with a male who identified as exclusively gay and was told thereafter he was HIV positive. Our intercourse had been unprotected, and my role as ‘passive’ nearly guaranteed transmission of the virus. I will never forget rushing near hysterical to a physician and being informed a test was not worth the effort. In order to be certain I was HIV negative, I had to wait six months. While the final result indicated the young man had been slandered, the cloud of that terrible possibility of death from an indifferent stranger never lifted from sexual intimacy. In "The Death of Ganymede" (which collects "Lust=Death, Kiddies!" and "Gay Teenage Wasteland") I interweave mythology with slipstream fiction to evidence how the AIDS epidemic impacted my writing and worldview.
