A startling discovery leads to a journey of self-discovery...and trouble for one boy growing up in rural Tennessee in 1909.
One blazing hot summer, twelve-year-old Joel lands himself in a stinking pile of trouble with his pa. He has to dig himself out--he has to--because, when it comes to winning back his father's love, failure's simply not an option. After making an extraordinary discovery in the family cornfield--the find of a lifetime--Joel hopes to finally redeem himself in his father's eyes. But, as Joel's about to discover, matters of redemption are rarely straightforward. Neither is the journey from boy to young man.
Come down home to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and sink your soul into some rich red Tennessee clay. You never know what you might unearth...

This quirky coming-of-age tale was inspired in part by a documentary I saw some time back about the discovery of mummified dinosaur remains. The story switched back and forth between a current discovery and older discoveries back in the 1900s. They showed how the modern crew kept their specimen in an air-controlled chamber to keep it preserved. I did wonder, what if the paleontologist's son accidentally left the door to that chamber open...
I hope you enjoy Joel's tale of discovery as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Lena Goldfinch was born in Tennessee and used to dig in the red clay of Sevierville for arrowheads and old glass bottles as a kid, but, alas, never found a dinosaur.
