HIT & RUN Every one of these three short stories is based upon an actual event – and each story includes narrative by one of the characters. ‘Hit & Run’: an extraordinary and unexpected snowstorm causes disruption to the homeward journey of commuters at the end of the working day. Yorkshire-born Jodie is used to driving in the snow, but even she may have met her match. In the confusion of the blinding snowstorm, she witnesses a hit and run accident, which has unforeseen consequences. ‘Letter to Thomas’: Alice is a domestic servant, working in a grand country house just before the start of the Second World War. The story revolves around her relationships with other staff, and with her employers. As she says, “I was never a pretty girl, even when I was young”. The whole story is revealed in a letter to the son she has not seen since he was four years old. ‘The Teacher’: Joyce Granger has been teaching for over a decade. Most of her pupils have gone on to university and many have achieved important careers. Yet her reputation as the most successful teacher at St Martins is being undermined by a new and relatively inexperienced teacher, with half her qualifications. Something must be done about it! The names, and, in some cases, the locations, have been changed to protect the characters in these stories. The sentiment behind the title ‘HIT & RUN’ could be applied to all three stories.
