If you are reading this, then you've encountered bed bugs. I wrote this battle plan because getting rid of bed bugs and keeping your home free from bed bugs is a battle...with a very small, blood-sucking enemy. Make no mistake, bed bugs are tough combatants: they wear tough armor, attack under cover of darkness, employ chemical weapons to numb your skin and to cause your blood to flow, retreat to the most difficult to find locations, can survive without food for as long as 550 days, and hatch reinforcements every 10 days. The good news, if there is any, is that bed bugs are not known to transmit human diseases.
One more bit of good news: you can win the battle against bed bugs as long as you have the right reinforcements. According to the University of California Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources, “Although over-the-counter pesticide products that have ‘bed bug control’ written on the label can be found on store shelves, they generally are not recommended. As a member of the Thrasher family, Garrett grew up in the pest control business founded by his father in 1979. After earning his B.S. in Psychology from U.C. Irvine, he worked for several different pest control companies to understand various business models. His number one take-away was the same as his family’s philosophy: there is nothing more important than customer satisfaction. Garrett settled in San Diego and opened the Southern California branch of the business. As with many areas of the U.S., San Diego residents have been plagued by bed bugs. Wanting to provide the best possible service to his customers, Garrett immersed himself in understanding bed bug habits and in adopting the most effective methodologies for bed bug extermination. After performing thousands of bed bug treatments, he discovered that the number one predictor of success was the active participation of the affected people. Unfortunately, while many pest control operators are good at their jobs, many fail in their ability to adequately arm their clients for the forthcoming battle against bed bugs. Garrett wrote the Bed Bug Battle Plan to ensure that his clients, and anyone else suffering from bed bugs, understood their role in bed bug control and were able to make informed decisions about the best control option for their situation. Garrett Thrasher is a San Diego District Director of the Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC), a member of the bedbugFREE network, and a member of the National Pest Management Association.
