April, 1861, the country is on the verge of war and someone is killing the women of Harford while William Hanlin - State's Attorney, Mexican War veteran - watches his carefully constructed anonymity fray as he is swept back into a world he left abruptly years earlier.
Bruce Catton meets Deadwood and Band of Brothers with a dash of John Grisham. William Hanlin's Civil War is rife with adventure, death, intrigue, disillusionment, military justice, bigotry, betrayal, sex, terrorism, cowardice, bravery, literacy, humor, philosophy, religion, madness, and, ultimately, redemption.

From the Author:

I've been asked, at least 50 times and counting this week alone "what is the Hanlin series about". I do the quick, elevator speech - Civil War historical fiction that's different - kind of a combination of Deadwood, Band of Brothers, and Scott Turow.

Then my questioner hits me with "Oh, yeah, like the Shaara guys, right? You know I saw Gettysburg...."
Well, no, then they would not be different. At all.
I was going to write a short essay on why William Hanlin's story is different, then I realized that our refund policy is the best description of the books, so here it is:

If there is a problem with the quality of the book that does not include being upset with any of the following portrayals of Civil War America - profanity, sex, violence, sarcasm, black humor, racism in every form, obscene political motivation, criminality, authoritarianism, disloyalty, censorship, profiteering, terrorism, guerilla warfare -side by side with humanity and astonishing valor, we will happily (well, not really, we'll pout, throw things and curse your name, but you won't know any of that) refund the cost of the book with its return (in the dim hope we can get the printer to accept the blame).
This does nicely as a summation, I think, as well as a warning of sorts.

About the Author:

RR Hicks has a law degree, writes, consults, edits, blogs, and has survived and thrived through an innate ability to shoot a basketball - a story for another day.

A soccer and rugby player most of his adult life, he is also a history 'buff' though he despises the term).

He will defend to the death the simple truth that Shelby Foote's one and one half page, almost stream of consciousness, description of The Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania is more moving, powerful, and visceral than any novel, movie or television show about the Civil War. Ever... until now, of course.

He dearly hopes Tennyson was right:

Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield . . .
