My Saga of Burke, Virginia (our Foley hometown since 1980) continues with this third book in the series. Delightful is the word to describe the hours I was privileged to spend with longtime Burke residents Delbert "Bill" Sheads, Dolores Latney Dennie, Glenn Curtis, Mary Goins Roots, Alison Hopkins Sowar as we traveled back to the days of their ancestors in our Burke hometown. In 2014, I created the C.H.E.S. (Coffer Historical Exploration Society aka Corazon's HES) that has been meeting every Second Saturday to examine the 1940 Census and to continue exploring the fascinating story of the Coffer family that started life as Burke residents in 1728 -- and the Coffer ties with the five Pearson slaves emancipated in 1861 by Francis Coffer IV. The story with 9th generation Mary Goins Roots has been obscured as the History Commission ignored accuracy in black-and-white history in pre-Civil War Burke. "More Burke Vignettes: 1728 - 2015" honors those Burke residents who did the right thing by the American ideal of human equality and good neighborliness. The Hopkins, Sheads, Curtis were good to all their neighbors, including the Latneys and Goins; while the black community worked to help each other during the time of segregation when Fairfax County was oppressing them particularly in denying equal education. A highlight of the "Burke Vignettes" is of Bill Sheads saving 9 black children of Moses Brooks during the 1941 Burke wildfire -- just before he served in WWII, including participation in the Normandy landings. For 2015, we will celebrate "Sheads Court" Road for Burke's Very Good Neighbor.
