Synopsis

What happened to Alfred's foot? After a morning at the park, Alfred the turtle's foot is bumpy and sticky, and it hurts, too! It's up to Pipsie to figure out what gave him a tender tootsie. As Alfred shows Pipsie where he went that day, they come upon all kinds of insects―from ants to spiders to honeybees. And the clues Pipsie uncovers lead her on a twisty, turny, and even slightly stinky nature mystery.

About the Author

Rick DeDonato started writing and drawing storybooks for his two kids, Alexis and Matt, when they were little. They're grown now, but Rick is still creating stories! When he's not dreaming up adventures for Pipsie, he's an award-winning creative director in advertising. Born in New Jersey, he now lives in Wilmington, Delaware, with Nancy McAleer. They share a house with their dog, Nacho, and turtle, Alfred E. Turtle!―and the spirit of Tugger, who now plays over the Rainbow Bridge.

Tracy Bishop won an art contest in kindergarten, and she's been creating art ever since. A graduate of San Jose State University, she is the illustrator of First Grade, Here I Come! by D. J. Steinberg, Not the Quitting Kind by Sarra J. Roth, and the Pipsie, Nature Detective series by Rick DeDonato. She lives in San Jose, California, where she is inspired on a daily basis by her son, husband, and a hairy dog named Harry.

Reviews

PreS-Gr 2—In her third outing, nature-loving Pipsie must uncover the mystery of her turtle Alfred's bumpy, sticky, smelly foot. What kind of insect could have bitten him? Armed with her backpack, magnifying glass, and trusty nature notebook, Pipsie sets out with Alfred to look for clues. Pipsie provides facts about each insect they encounter and explains why it could not be the culprit. When Alfred inadvertently reenacts an event from earlier in the day, Pipsie is able to put the visual clues and her knowledge of insects together to solve the mystery. Likable and enthusiastic Pipsie uses methodical, scientific exploration to find her answer—even charting how each insect's characteristics factor into her search. The illustrations are large and bright, and Pipsie looks determined yet cheerful in a pink hat, pink shirt, and purple pants. A minor quibble is that Pipsie initially tells Alfred he needs to take a bath before they can go investigating, and Alfred is seen before a tub filled with water and toys. Later, he is pictured with grass still sticking to his foot, and the spider they meet calls him "a sticky-stinky turtle." However, Alfred should be clean until he reenacts the event that solves the mystery. A page of fun nature facts is appended. VERDICT A general purchase where picture book mysteries and natural history are popular.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA
