CHAPTER 1

How Old is Mankind

What we once thought of human evolution has to be re-evaluated due to new results which seem to complicate the situation that were derived from a DNA test from a 400,000-year-old human thighbone. The bone was found in what is known as the "Pit of Bones", in a cave in Northern Spain. It was currently thought to be the oldest human mitochondrial material ever sequenced. The 400,000-year-old human thighbone is approximately 200,000 years older than modern humans. According to National Geographic, prior to the recent thighbone analysis, the oldest human DNA sequenced came from bones that were much younger, roughly 120,000 years old. Techniques in age analysis have advanced monumentally." The details of the "Pit of Bones" discovery were published in the journal "Nature".

On a previous find, using archeological evidences in Ethiopia, it took archaeologists more than 35 years to determine the age of tools discovered in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Their discovery revealed that those tools could be at least 276,000 years old. Until that moment the oldest samples of Homo Sapiens' bones were found to have been 195,000 years of age, this is a discrepancy of 81,000 years and, in its time, it was once accepted as a fact.

In September 2014 researchers announced a possible new addition to our family tree. They introduced the world to Homo Naledi, a strange, human-like species with a mix of modern and primitive features which were detailed in the open-access journal "E-Life" which was led by paleoanthropologist Lee Berger from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. The fossil was found in 2013 by two amateur cavers' spelunking through the recesses of the Rising Star cave system, located 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg.

This cousin, Homo Naledi, has been dated to be roughly 2,000,000,000 years old. But, rather than reveling in their discovery, scientists are finding themselves getting frustrated because of their ever increasing conflicting findings in the already acquired evidence indicating to them that humanity is older
