Nightmare looked even blacker than I remembered. (I didn't believe it when Doc told me there is no such thing as a black Thoroughbred but some are so close most people refer to them as black.) She still looked very tiny in the straw-filled stall, but that was the end of her resemblance to the nearly dead newborn I remembered. . . . . . I was almost fifteen when I walked into the pool hall with Papa and met Caden Riley. That day I had no idea my life was about to totally change. I liked shooting pool, playing poker, and watching the ponies run at The Big Fresno Fair with Papa, but owning a Thoroughbred racehorse – even a baby one? What a long shot that would be. I did. By the time I was seventeen, my list of friends included an old horse doctor, a very small-time racehorse trainer, a has-been apprentice jockey, and two college girls. I'm Nicolasa Lucile de la Luz and this is my story. This is J Alyn Ahrens premier novel. She says one of the best things about writing horse racing stories is all the great people she gets to meet and the wonderful places she gets to visit while doing research.

J Alyn Ahrens has loved horses from the day she learned to say "horsie". She bought her first horse, an old gelding named Slim, at the age of seventeen. Her horse-savvy friends estimated Slim's age at about seventeen also. She and that old horse had a lot of fun together. She dated her future husband from the back of that old gelding. Then came marriage and children and Slim found himself retired in the big pasture behind her home. Now, the family raised, she is returning to her first love , horses. Not to ride them, but to write about them. She says she chose to write about race horses partly because she loved The Black Stallion so much but also because, during the early years of her marriage, she lived almost next door to two Thoroughbred brood mares, their offspring, and their owner. The day she had her picture taken in the winner's circle with her neighbor and his horse ranks among the most memorable days of her life.
