Review:

1.      I read the author's first book "One Last Day" a few months ago it was really moving and emotionally wrenching. It dealt with the author losing her husband, and on his 'last day' she recounts their lives together. It ends with him passing away, and this book picks right up from where the other left off, with the author and her family/friends dealing with the aftermath of David's death, from the small things to the big, and how finding a 'manageable life' is much like waiting for the lilacs to bloom... once you plant the seeds it takes several years for the results to manifest. A candid look into the grieving process, as well as recovery and moving on. A recommended read, and I suggest reading the first one before this just to give it some context. 2.      It's hard to imagine anything tougher than losing a loved one...especially after spending so many years together and building a life together... in my opinion it would be harder than losing one that 'never had a chance to be' (like the fiancé), although the author sees otherwise. Regardless, unless you've actually been through it, many of us cannot even fathom what the survivors go through after losing a loved one (in this case her husband), and this book provides a delicate and real look at the stages their family went through after losing their husband and father. A remarkable journey of healing told by a remarkable woman. I can see this memoir really helping others who are going through the same thing, or at least provide some understanding for others who are going through it. 3.      Thisis the second book I've read from Dawn Starrett, the first being the memoir "One Last Day: From Fear and Loss to Acceptance and Gratitude" that recounted the passing of her husband of 20 years, David. This follow up memoir covers the aftermath of his death... from the immediate funeral arrangements, to the girls going back to school, to Dawn finally foraging (bravely) into online dating, to going back to work... just trying to get "the lilacs to bloom",  a metaphor for her life coming back to a livable level after years of loss and grief and transition. This was a powerful, well written biography that is suitable for teens through adults, and can help with relating to the grief process, and show that there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel. 4.      I was incredibly moved after reading Dawn Starrett's first book, "One Last Day", and I am glad that she wrote this next one and that I had a chance to read it to see what the family (and her) have been going through since David's death, and how they are managing to cope. Of course it is heartbreaking and tragic tolose a loved one, but Dawn Starrett manages to handle this emotional topic with a respectable level of 'detachment' for lack of a better word. There is no pityparties, or wallowing in misery... just a fast paced, easy to read, engaging narrative that is upbeat and even humorous at times, but does stay rooted in the sense of the circumstances around them. Loved reading about the trip to the Harry Potter locations and LOVED the poems! Wow, especially David's in the beginning and her daughter's in the end. Very moving and touching. A great read. 1.      Another amazing and emotionally moving book by Dawn Starrett. I admit that this one didn't have me in tears the way the first one did, but that doesn't make it anyless impactful! It just covers a different phase of her experiences, this is more the after effects of her husband dying, and dealing with life and the realworld, and trying to make it work. The way the author writes and shares little stories and events with us we really feel like we are a part of her world, like she is a friend. It is nice to know that it seems like after some rough patches(dating, the robbery, the nosebleed story!!) that it seems like for her the lilacs are blooming, and she is moving onto another part of her life and can be happy and live again. Thank you for sharing this incredible books(s) with us!(5 stars). Anabella Johnson - GoodReads;Shelfari; Librarything; Barnes & Noble; Indie Book Reviewers

2.      This was both sad, but inspiring at the same time. It begins with the author losing her husband, and then almost walks us through all the steps that follow, from telling the kids, to the service, to healing and moving on without him, and how difficult it can be. I thought the author Dawn Starrett handled this touchy subject with a candor and finesse that makes us really empathize with her situation and experiences, but without being completely overwrought about it,which would be both easy to do, and in her case, completely understandable. There is enough detail so that we understand the emotional rollercoaster, yet it is not the sole focus... in this regard I appreciated that because it allows us to see the bigger picture of the grief and recovery process, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with the death of a loved one, or anyone really, as we will all experience it at some point in our lives. Also check out the author's first book "One last day: from fear and loss toacceptance and gratitude." (5 stars) SamRyan - GoodReads; Shelfari; Librarything; Barnes & Noble; Indie BookReviewers
