Aya hails from a tradition of oral storytellers. With her illiterate grandparents’ intervention and the aid of a Carnegie librarian, Aya learned to read and write by age 6. Though Aya’s first priority is to entertain, she is also dedicated to portraying women--in the words of Nora Ephron--“as complicated and interesting as women are”; her protagonists change their worlds. “It is time for media, including literature, to accept that women are complex, strong, brave, heroic, and capable of being the rescuers, rather than always being the damsel-in-distress or the Manic-Pixie-Dream-Girl,” Aya says. Aya has been a wildlife habitat manager, researcher, nomad, farmer, mechanic, construction worker, waitress, personal guard to children, and representative of the people to California Coastal Zone Committee, House of Representatives. Aya currently lives in the shadows of the Cascade Mountains. She and her wife Deva own a 12-acre wildlife/wild bird habitat. When she isn’t writing, Aya loves to read, hike, work with her German Shepherd dogs, tend the land, ride her motorcycle, and spend time with family and friends.
