From the Author:
I was introduced to Yoga at an early age by my parents. I continued to practice Yoga regularly during my stay in IIT Bombay from 1971 to 1976 and from 1977 to 1979. Integrating Yoga in daily life became a challenge when I started my professional career after IIT days. Interest in Yoga was re-ignited when I moved to Pune in 2012. Recently, I completed a rigorous 4 months certificate course jointly conducted by Kaiwalyadhama Yoga Institute, Lonavala and University of Pune, Pune.
Tell us what motivated you to write these books?
Lack of a concise text book for certification in Yoga was the primary motivation for writing the book. The Yoga course I did, consisted of five subjects but an integrated view of all five subjects was missing. After completing the Yoga course, I travelled to Seattle, USA to spend some time with my family. In Seattle, I got required thought space and spare time to focus on writing this book. Createspace of Amazon provided me with an excellent platform to publish my book and to make it available to the global audience in shortest possible span of only 4 days.
Did you face challenges while you were writing your book?
Writing the book is very similar to managing a multi-resource project. Overcoming writer's block was the greatest challenge. Keeping yourself motivated to write on a daily basis is another. For maximum impact, I wanted to keep the original references from Traditional texts in Devnagari script. Kindle edition of the book could not uploaded because the Kindle platform does not support multiple scripts in a single book. I could finish writing and publishing this book in 10 weeks. I feel that, getting an able reviewer to review the book during the writing stage, is still a challenge. The book could have been ten times more valuable if I had overcome that challenge.
Where did you get your information or idea for your book?
I referred to the traditional texts on Yoga while writing the book. The thought chains were developed into sentences, paragraphs and chapters. Mindmaps, Figures, and diagrams used in the book were drawn using open source software. Today, so much information is available on the Internet on Yoga, but authenticity of that information is doubtful. Yoga being an experiential science, I have tried to share my own experiences, reflections and insights in the book.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned while you were writing the book?
I never thought earlier in my life, that I would be writing a book on Yoga. Most of my professional experience has been in the area of leveraging computer hardware and writing systems software. I realized while writing the book, that the Asanas are nothing but test cases designed by our Sages for assessing human capabilities and the eight steps in Yoga actually depict spiral model of human development. Based on this learning, I am now writing my next book on "Application of Yoga in Robotics".
