Decades ago, the chemistry sets sold by companies like Sears had 30-100 chemicals, glass breakers, flasks, and stirring rods. Not today. Today's chemistry sets lack the very essence of discovery: new paths. While not feasible today for a company to construct a chemistry set, you are able to assemble one by using chemicals readily available from the kitchen and stores.
This book shows you how to assemble a respectable chemistry set. It has 100s of experiments, defined and outlined. For those who are serious about learning chemistry without breaking the budget, this book is direct, frank and gritty.
There is a workbook version, ISBN #978-1511618502, which is entirely gray scale.

I should apologize. I made some errors.
When I say I made errors, I mean that this book is not for the wimps; when I say that I need to apologize, I'm not going to. Contained are 100s of chemistry experiments. This book is a bit gritty; if you cannot tolerate conservative viewpoints, either skip over the sections or don't buy the books. Leaving a review criticizing my viewpoints when I warn you here, is just lazy... and bordering on stupid.
I have been studying this and performing experiments for coming on 40 years. I am fascinated, enthralled, intrigued, and any other adjective of the like with this field. I hold a great deal of respect for chemists. I worked with a man named Kurt at Fotomat Corp in Connecticut. I amused him with my simple questions, but he explained in the best way he could to a teenager. He was cool.
Experiments? Yes, there is a ton. The first third of the book are sections that explain various aspects of chemistry. The rest? Experiments. You could easily jump right in and play. Really it was/is play for me. While not exhaustive, I try to incorporate and frame experiments with materials you can get in nearby stores. That was the whole exercise: how to experiment with materials you can acquire locally. Sure you can order stuff on eBay, but there is much you can do right now.
I hope you try it. I made two editions, color and black & white. The reason is obvious: the black & white version is much cheaper, but you will also want the color one as a reference. I did not even try to make the book "black & white compatible," and both are cheap for all that you get. I assure you that if you did one experiment per day it would take you more than a year to get through them. Sure, there are around 70 experiment pages, but in reality each page represents several minor experiments and verification experiments resulting in hundreds of indivisible cases. You will have plenty to do for a long time.
In a time when a skinned knee lands you in the ER, Children Services abducts a couple's two children because the kids were playing in a nearby playground unsupervised, schools' lackluster curriculum gravitates towards Harry Potter's "Dolores Umbridge," and firearms "force" otherwise "normal" people like OJ Simpson criminals, it is time to affirm that we can take and own responsibility for our own lives.
Such is the premise of this book.
Inside are hundreds of experiments that explain and demonstrate basic and intermediate chemistry concepts. Try your hand at electro- or crucible chemistry; explore what different metals do when exposed to different agents; and build your own chemical stores.
