In these two stories, Peruvian author Rolando Sifuentes presents vivid depictions of his sea-going characters, as well as the coastal towns and waters of his native country. The men of the first story, “The Hook,” challenge the perilous seas in their little outboard-engined boats, to catch the small fish that barely provide a living for their families, In it, young Javier is faced with a dilemma. He must abandon his beloved old mentor, his trusty old engine and boat, in order to obtain a modern craft, so he can satisfy his wife’s desire for a better way of life. In the second story, “Seamen,” crews of much larger craft sail out into deeper waters after white shark and marlin. The time is the mid-20th century, when there was still a boundless supply of fish in that part of the Pacific. Here Sifuentes tells how the sharks and marlin came to be annihilated, their numbers falling dramatically. Our hero, Santos, must cope with ambitious and greedy fishing tycoons who, not fearing the sea, demand more and more fish be taken. Thus, he must battle to save himself and his crewmen, when the furious ocean unleashes her full fury against them, in retaliation. Good read for juvenile people.
