A story of love, power and betrayal in the last days of the Roman empire. 451 AD and Rome is under threat, Attila's Huns poised to invade. Thraustila the Goth - a mercenary whose wife and child were killed by Huns - is hired by senator Petronius Maximus to spy on a Roman general who the senator believes is working for the Huns, in exchange for food for Thraustila's starving people. Thraustila rescues General Aetius' spirited daughter Livia from bandits and uses her to get close to her father. While searching for proof of the General's treachery, he develops feelings for Livia which bring him into conflict with her betrothed, the cold and aristocratic officer Majorian. Thraustila learns that Roman gold sent to Attila is being stolen and begins to suspect that a conspiracy which can be traced all the way up to the Emperor is using him to discredit General Aetius. As the Huns swarm across the Rhine, Thraustila discovers something that turns his world upside down. Betrayed into the hands of his enemies, he soon learns that he can trust no-one and must make terrible choices if he is to survive and meet his date with destiny.
