Johannesburg Airport - A Novel

9781511734141: Johannesburg Airport - A Novel

Gail Msika-Antonio lives with her husband of 20 yrs and 5 kids, in Wellesley, Massachusetts. This is Gail's debut novel in which she tackles a very serious topic of loss and pain mingled with contemporary subjects and family life. This book is uniquely humorous, beautiful as well as heart breaking, as you walk with the main character Palesa and her extremely wealthy South African family...At first one is stunned to even think such families with so much wealth exist and how un-relatable she is. But in an instant Palesa's dream life is shattered by one thoughtless act of crime. Suddenly one sees how human Palesa is. By the time you get half way through the book crying, laughing, thinking out loud, you are dying to meet this woman's children and when you do, there is more crying and laughter. When you finally come to the end of the book you want to know more about this family and you want to find our what happened to them next. You miss Palesa and one gets her by the end of the book and as you shut the book and return back to your normal life you can't help but think her children will be her biggest challenge yet! Teenagers! OMGoosh, LOL, YOLO! The conversations in this book are amazing, controversial and gripping. Its a colourful book, very cleverly put together. The author did not waste time in describing the looks or the detail in personalities of the people or the places highlighted in the story, there is a clear focus to just tell the story. I loved reading every word of it. I was curious to know what Palesa looked like so I asked Gail (the author) and she said, "Well if you have to imagine Palesa think of actress Gabriella Union, Rian looks like a less worked out, less muscular looking version of British actor Henry Cavill and Michael looks like actor Trai Byers, and for Xanthe think of a Cape Coloured version of The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley." This book has very clear messages.... Asked what prompted her to write Gail said communicating and talking is the only thing she has done for over 10 000 hours! (From Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers) When she got this story, inspired by the true tragic events of legendary singer Lucky Dube and the trauma of walking through healing with her husband who was hi-jacked by five armed men; she wanted to raise awareness of crime victims and victors and the evils around us everywhere, especially raise awareness of those who can not speak for themselves like little children, poverty stricken mothers and unborn children. She realises education is key; the key to alleviating poverty and emotional barriers we have put to discriminate against each other. Gail is passionate about getting rid of global mindsets discriminating against other peoples and cultures. Where did she get time to write? She didn't get anytime she said there came a time she just had to write. Gail Loves her family and travelling she speaks English and Shona fluently, she is conversant in French. She skis in winter and is the best skier in her family, fearless on black slopes. She loves different cultures, travelling and how people live, when travelling she does not feel quite like she knows the place until she has been in someone's home. When I asked her so yours is a marriage to be admired and aspire to, she laughed and said that the trials of life are relentless and persistent the only reason she and her husband were still happy and standing after 20yrs of marriage was their unwavering faith in Jesus Christ! Gail was born in Zimbabwe, married her high school sweetheart British born South African husband. They lived in Cape Town then, after 3 years of marriage they moved to England then when they had their second child they moved back to Africa, Johannesburg. Gail needed help with the kids. After ten years in Joburg their moved to Boston with no help and five children, for Gail not having full time house help like everyone in South Africa does almost made her go crazy!
