This short history was inspired by a nearly 50 year friendship with one of the most respected and admired men in Sonoma County California. Bill KORTUM has justly received the title of “The father of the environmental movement in Sonoma County.” His life is a remarkable testament to one man’s dedication to causes that were not popular and strongly opposed in the 1960’s when he first challenged the old powers of a very conservative county. In 50 years time he was able to change the thinking of the public to make Sonoma County one of the most progressive areas in the nation on environmental matters. The book follows him through those years from the creation of the first environmental politically active organization, COAAST (Californians Organized to Acquire Access to State Tidelands) through a number of significantly successful activist groups who together sensitized the public about the importance of environment and landscape in Sonoma County. The book documents his many achievements and tries to capture the unique qualities of leadership that would later be honored in obituaries in all the major newspapers in California on his death in December 2014.
