Florian Deltgen, a young German anthropologist, goes to Colombia to do research among tropical rain forest Indians. He makes the acquaintance of Pancho Wagner, a runaway German Air Force pilot, who becomes his friend and mentor. During the months leading up to Deltgen's departure into the jungle, he and Mr. Wagner spend much time together in the garden of Wagner's beautiful finca in the company of the local fiiremen and Wagner recounts stories and events from his unusual life. The short stories in this book are partly tales from Pancho Wagners life as air traffic planner and owner of a ranch amidst the Colombian Civil War, the Violencia, and partly records of events that Deltgen witnessed while staying at Wagner house as a guest. These events and Wagner's coaching bring Deltgen to an understanding of the violent and yet often funny Colombian way of life.
