Over the course of the 2014-2015 school year, Room 2 students responded to over ten writing prompts, including questions related to their project work as well as a few originally featured in The Kids’ Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, Ph.D. They participated in mini-lessons and discussions about how to plan for writing, engage in free writing, introduce a thesis and support it with evidence, incorporate dialogue and descriptive language, and revise and edit their own work. Each time they considered a new question, their goal was to write a single paragraph with a topic sentence, at least three reasons with details to support it, and a conclusion. During this process of planning, writing, revising, and editing, it became clear that each student had unique strengths and areas for growth. In class, they regularly consulted a binder full of writing tips and exemplary work done by my past students. Students and their parents met after school three times to discuss their writing and receive extended critique. At the end of the year, they were asked to select up to four of their best pieces of writing or to write new pieces before engaging in a final cycle of writing, revising, editing, and publishing.
