Does Christ teach a theory of politics?

Everyone agrees that Christ has a teaching about the relationship of the believer to politics. But almost no one believes that this teaching involves a theory of politics.

However, it is the argument of this book that Christ's teaching contains a complete political theory.

The narrative begins in ancient Israel. Alone in the ancient world, Israel believed in one God Who created the heavens and the earth. And this meant that God was completely separate from them. In the rest of the ancient world, the cosmos, the gods, and the state were all one thing. Only in Israel did the prophets sent by God possess a spiritual authority that was independent of the authority of the state. This "separation of powers" was unique in the ancient world.

By His resurrection, Christ introduced this separation of powers into the Western world. All believers in Christ now lived a personal existence that was separate from the power of the state. Indeed, this is why pagan Rome could not tolerate the Christian church, since Rome claimed a spiritual authority that transcended all "private religions." This is why a spiritual - and political - war between Rome and the Christian church was inevitable.

The narrative now turns to an overview of the thousand years following the fall of pagan Rome, during which the chief political conflict of the West was between the church and the state. The separation of powers created by Christ's teaching now became the single most important political reality in the Western world.

The Political Theory of Christ now enters into its main narrative, telling the story of the rise of modern constitutionalism, in which the state divided itself into separate authorities. This revolution reached its pinnacle in the American Constitution, which rested not only upon a separation of powers among the three branches of government, but upon a separation of powers between the national and state governments.  More radically, the American political experiment also rested upon a conception of religious freedom that, for the first time, created a separation of powers among persons rather than among institutions.

As the narrative moves closer to our time, the focus shifts to the story of the radical decline of the American political experiment.  After 1932, the separation of powers among the three branches of the national government, as well as between the national and the state governments, was - in essence- abolished.  The modern administrative state - the national bureaucracy - now began to create its own laws, to enforce its own laws, and to adjudicate its own laws, as a unitary political authority, in place of the constitutional separations of power.  The Political Theory of Christ provides an overview of how this revolution occurred.

The American conception of religious freedom was also abolished. Under the Constitution, America had largely organized its society through the voluntary associations of its citizens, based upon their personal religious beliefs.  But today's society is state-controlled and organized according to a unitary spiritual template called progressivism. America's Christians have been returned to the state of those Christians who lived under Pagan Rome, with all "private religious beliefs" now subordinate to this public pagan religion.

But The Political Theory of Christ does not end on this pessimistic note. It ends with the bold prediction that progressivism will be finally overthrown, as Christ's political revolution continues, through the eventual creation of an even deeper separation of powers.

Book Description Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. For once the theologians and the biblical scholars are in agreement: Christ has a teaching about politics, but Christ does not teach a theory of politics. However, it is the argument of this book that the political teaching of Christ entails a complete political theory. That theory can be discovered both in Christ s teaching and in the radical impact of that teaching on the political history of the West. That political history can only be understood as a series of deepening separations of power over time, first between the church and the state, and then within both the church and the state. Christ s teaching concerning the radical distinction to be made between God and Caesar has grown, in the past two thousand years, to define all human relations. Seller Inventory # APC9781512277951
