Acupuncturist and Chinese-medicine practitioner Kearney is a well-educated and experienced author with a message. In this text, he presents his own journey of healing personal ailments, such as a stutter and anxiety, through practices such as meditation, stretching, and controlled breathing. He presents a well-organized, well-researched text containing empowering solutions for stress, depression, and a host of other physical issues. With endorsements from such household names as Ringo Starr, Kearney suggests simple tactics, including mindful breathing, pausing, and using humor, to ground oneself in the present moment. In a humorous anecdote that explains the book’s odd title, the author describes the mantra, “Just Chaaa,” as a memorable, universal idea of relaxing, accepting the present, and releasing the need to control external factors. The book is also full of intriguing perspectives on biology. For example, the author states that the human eye was designed to view the horizon and wide-open space; thus, he says, bodily alignment, lifted stature, and an open gaze help restore the body to its natural, relaxed state. It’s easy to see why contemporary practices, such as long hours at a computer or lying on a couch watching television, wouldn’t signal the body to relax in the same way that engagement with nature on a trail, beach, or an open field might. A native of Ireland, Dr. Kearney immigrated to Australia when he was 13 years old. In 1975, after receiving a diploma from the Acupuncture College of Australia, Dr. Kearney joined the faculty there and began lecturing in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane. During this time, he also attended the New South Wales College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy in Sydney. As one of the few qualified teachers of Chinese medicine in the late 1970s, Dr. Kearney was invited by the California Acupuncture College to become head of their acupuncture department (the second institution of its kind accredited in California). At this time he was instrumental in the implementation of Chinese medicine on the West Coast. During the course of his studies at the International College of Chinese Medicine and at the Acupuncture College of Australia, he studied under the tutelage of Dr. Van Buren, master acupuncturist and osteopath, and Dr. Russell Jewell. Both taught him the integration of energetic and physical medicine. In 1986, Dr. Kearney received a doctorate of Chinese medicine from the California Acupuncture College. His search for alternative healing reached a spiritual level when he became a monk, and practiced meditation and celibacy for five years. This pursuit brought him to the U.S. Through his practice as a monk, and as a doctor of energetic medicine, he developed his own unique style of breathing and meditation, which is the basis for the breathing practices he teaches. Over a period of 15 years, Dr. Kearney traveled nationally and internationally, with various musical acts. He is recognized with special acknowledgments on Bob Dylan’s album, Knocked Out and Loaded, as well as George Harrison’s album, Cloud Nine.
