Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is a chronic illness that is mainly associated with children. However, many adults are afflicted with ADHD as well and have often gone undiagnosed for years. Unfortunately, more children are being diagnosed with this problem each year. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 11% of children between the ages of 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011. There has been a gradual increase over the years, from a figure 7.8% in 2003 to an increase of 9.5% in 2007 to the 2011 rate of 11%. The average age for being diagnosed with ADHD is seven years old, but the American Academy of Pediatrics, AAP, claims that children as young as four years old can be diagnosed with this condition. Usually when younger children are diagnosed with this affliction, their cases are more severe.
