This is the first book in the 'Obeahman' series. In this volume, Trinidad and Tobago's annual Carnival celebration is the setting in which Belle, a young American history student, finds herself embroiled in a deadly occult struggle between a practitioner of the black arts and the defenders of his innocent victims. This evil obeahman has been preying on young women, using their life-force to enhance his power. Belle meets and befriends David Chelmsford, a young journalist whose policeman father, Inspector Chelmsford, has little regard for Journalism and is angry over his son's career choice. As the danger mounts all around them, the friends must win the help of the Gods and find a way to do more than survive; the grandiose plans of the evil Obeahman who is stalking them must be thwarted and the man himself brought to justice. The ancient African Deities, Papa Bois and Madame D'lo extend their protection and assistance to the young friends, but David himself must quickly develop new abilities if he is to win this battle to the death with the evil forces arrayed against them. Well researched and written, the book is a great slice of life of another world; a riveting page-turner that is full of the history and culture of the islands.
