In honor of a "forever friend" Artist Rosemary Brofos has created a tribute to her lifetime best friend Helen whom she met in grade school in Kissimmee, Florida during World War II. Still grieving for her 6-year old sister who died from diphtheria, Rosemary and her mother move from Illinois to the cow country of central Florida to live with grandparents while her father serves in the US Navy in the Pacific. Helen, the daughter of a genuine Florida cowboy, soon teaches Rosemary how to love and live on despite tragedy. The two share adventures in Kissimmee before Disney World and Universal Studios exist, times that were simpler without Internet, cell phones and video games. While the war raged on two fronts, the Atlantic and Pacific, Rosemary and Helen are impacted in little ways--wearing outgrown clothes, giving handmade gifts on birthdays or Christmas, growing a Victory Garden and watching news clips of the war at the movies. With the war always in the back of their minds, these two grade school girls are nonetheless rich with love from parents, grandparents and friends. This illustrated book is intended for children and parents/grandparents to read together, with grandparents reminiscing and kids learning about a unique time in our country's history. Filled with color illustrations by Rosemary herself, she writes about people who lived in Kissimmee during the 1940s. She also includes photos of the two little girls as they grow up, marry and have children of their own, all the while staying in contact with one another. This memoir is a work of love and testimony to the value of enduring friendships.

From the Author:

I wrote this book in memory of Helen Bass Rogers, my "forever" friend. Helen taught me to love again after I lost my older sister, Ramona, age 6, to diphtheria. Our childhood memories transcended later separations, and Helen will always dwell in my heart. I dedicated his book to all our children and grandchildren.

"My writing, my art, my grandchild, the chance to travel, the wonders of nature, all let me enter the world of childhood make-believe, where every day is a new adventure and learning is never-ending."

From the Back Cover:

Two Little Girls, North Meeting South

Back in the 1940s, two little girls wore a path through the backyard grass to each other's homes. Helen was born and raised in Kissimmee, and lived her whole life there. Her father, Hamp, would often say that he and Fanny, Helen's mother, loved "young 'uns." They had five young 'uns, and Helen was the baby.

Rosemary was from Chicago. She came to Kissimmee with her mother to live with her grandparents, the Hansons, when Rosemary's father was in the Navy serving in the Pacific during World War II.

The two little girls both had brown eyes and straight brown hair. They often dressed in sandals and sun suits just alike, so they looked almost like sisters. No matter where they were--at home, school, the lakefront park or climbing trees--they had their own little world, filled with fun and adventure.

Helen's father was a real cowboy on a huge ranch. The girls loved to watch him working with his lasso. Sometimes he would let them try their skills or catch them up in an easy throw. They loved playing cowboy and thought that Kissimmee must be the "Cow Capital of the World."
