Standing on the platform of the LA Metro one morning waiting for the train to take him to the high school where he teaches astronomy, 43 year old Jim Bentley gazes idly at the various people also waiting. Unintentionally his eyes meet momentarily with those of a woman a few feet from him. In the split second before they both continue their wandering glances the man with the woman sees their contact and thinking they were flirting goes into a jealous rage attacking Jim and knocking him unconscious. Regaining consciousness in the hospital Jim is totally paralyzed. And so begins the incredible journey that follows. He is invited to Heaven to decide whether to accept the challenge to try to help some people in his life who have problems they can't solve themselves. He accepts. And from then on he commutes repeatedly to Heaven and back, without ever leaving Earth.
