About the Authors

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was one of the most important and influential American science fiction writers of the twentieth century. His fiction explored unstable reality, artificial intelligence, altered memory, authoritarian systems, paranoia, identity, religion, and the uncertain boundary between the human and the manufactured. Although much of his work first appeared in science fiction magazines and paperback originals, his reputation grew steadily until he became one of the central figures in modern speculative fiction.Dick's major works include The Man in the High Castle, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Ubik, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, A Scanner Darkly, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, and numerous short stories. His fiction has had an enormous afterlife in film, television, and popular culture, inspiring adaptations such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, and The Man in the High Castle. Stories such as "Mr. Spaceship" and "Piper in the Woods" show the early magazine-fiction energy from which his larger body of work emerged.

Edmond Hamilton (1904-1977) was an American science fiction writer whose career stretched from the pulp magazine era into the later development of modern genre fiction. Often associated with space opera, cosmic adventure, and large-scale speculative storytelling, Hamilton became known for stories that moved across planets, stars, future wars, alien civilizations, and universe-spanning danger. His work helped define the sense of speed, scale, and wonder that made early magazine science fiction so popular.Hamilton published widely in the science fiction pulps and later became an important contributor to comics and popular adventure storytelling. He wrote the Captain Future stories and many other works of interplanetary and cosmic science fiction, while also producing short fiction, novels, and scripts that helped shape twentieth-century science fiction adventure. His contribution to this volume, "The Legion of Lazarus," belongs to the vigorous tradition of magazine SF in which bold premises, high stakes, and rapid narrative drive were central pleasures.

Milton Lesser (1928-2008), who also wrote under the name Stephen Marlowe, was an American writer whose career crossed science fiction, mystery, crime, historical fiction, and mainstream storytelling. Early in his career he wrote science fiction and fantasy for the magazines, publishing under his own name and under pseudonyms including C. H. Thames. His work from this period reflects the energy of the mid-century magazine market: compact plots, strong speculative ideas, space adventure, future danger, and sharply paced entertainment.Lesser later became better known as Stephen Marlowe, particularly for mystery and crime fiction, including the Chester Drum private-eye series, as well as for ambitious historical and literary novels. His science fiction stories remain part of the magazine tradition that fed the growth of American speculative fiction in the 1950s. This volume includes several Lesser pieces, including "Voyage to Eternity," "The Dictator," "The Graveyard of Space," and "Prison of a Billion Years," published under the C. H. Thames byline.
