Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist and short story writer known for her insightful portrayals of Victorian society and domestic life. Married to a Unitarian minister in Manchester, Gaskell became closely acquainted with the social and economic realities of the rapidly industrializing city, experiences that deeply influenced her writing.She achieved widespread recognition with novels such as Mary Barton, North and South, and Cranford, which explore the tensions between social classes, industrial change, and personal morality.
