It's 2019 and humanity is imperiled: governments and kingdoms are toppling, societies collapsing. Natural catastrophes and resource wars threaten our survival. In the heavens, a dim red star brightens in the night sky, heralding epochal change. Are we the architects of our own demise? Or are we merely bystanders to cosmic events? Among the endangered billions, Maya Jade, an American trapped in the south of France, is searching for answers while fighting to stay alive.

Maya Rising, the sequel to Last Call for Caviar, by Melissa Roen, picks up Maya Jade's story at its cliff-hanging mid-point. Miraculously reunited with her estranged lover, Julian,  they flee the besieged Côte d'Azur searching for safety in the vastness of the French Alps. After a harrowing journey through a state of anarchy, they find sanctuary in a well-defended Alpine village. For a short time it appears they've found haven above the rising tide of bloodshed engulfing the planet. But all too soon, events conspire to separate these star-crossed lovers once again.

Determined to rescue Julian, Maya hires two retired French soldiers to guide and protect her as she searches for him across the Alps, a majestic terrain now home to rogue militia, marauders, slave traders--and worse. Maya's pampered existence on the French Riviera--chronicled in Last Call for Caviar--is but a surreal memory. Now, every day is a struggle to maintain hope and avoid capture among the craggy peaks and haunted valleys ruled by warlords and populated by the desperate and degraded.

When Julian's trail leads south, Maya follows, coming full circle to the embattled principality she resolutely left behind. In a stroke of cosmic irony, Maya's mission brings her into intimate contact with her former lover, Abdul, a dangerous and charismatic man, whose skill at seduction she's never been able to resist or forget.

But in the course of a year, a new Maya Jade has emerged from the ashes of a decadent and doomed world. She's no longer wracked by doubt and paralyzed by fear. Risking everything, she employs instinct, cunning and every tool at her disposal to protect those she loves, while holding onto her humanity and ideals in a world gone mad. Readers seeking a sexy, adrenaline-filled ride in the company of a heroine who lives as fiercely as she loves will relish this tale of a woman's struggle to survive the end of the world.

Selected by Kirkus Review editors to be a featured Indie book in April 1, 2016 issue of Kirkus Review Magazine
"A vividly-imagined dark dystopian fantasy complete with passionate romance and dangerous alliances." -Kirkus Review
An intrepid pair has survived the apocalypse, but the worst is yet to come in Roen's sequel to Last Call for Caviar (2013).

Maya Jade and her lover, Julian, have fled their temporary place of refuge on the French Riviera. Fearing for their safety, they head toward Italy in a battered Land Rover full of weapons and provisions; but Maya cannot escape the dangers she encountered during her time mingling among the Riviera's jet set. She's being followed by Slava, a Russian who runs a human-trafficking ring. Julian's skill as a physician secures the couple safe passage into Italy and finally to the Hautes-Alpes, where he treats the locals and refugees. While Julian is out on an emergency call, an earthquake strikes the area, cutting of fall lines of communication. Desperate to find him, Maya enlists the help of Stephan and Laurent, two French military paratroopers. They discover that Julian has been kidnapped by a ruthless and bloodthirsty captain named Jacques Richmond, who's in league with Slava and planning a covert operation in Monaco. Maya soon realizes her only hope for saving Julian lies with her former lover Abdul. As she renews alliances and faces old dangers in her efforts to free Julian, Maya realizes her feelings for Abdul are more complicated than she had thought. Told in a series of journal entries that span the years 2018-2019,this sequel seamlessly picks up where Last Call for Caviar left off, and the narrative moves with the same intensity. The action is gripping, but there is a grimmer edge to the tragedies unfolding around Maya and Julian. The storms and other ecological disasters have continued unabated, and the desperation and lawlessness have resulted in shocking acts of violence, including rape and cannibalism. Once again, erotic romance plays a major role in the story. Although Maya never questions her love for Julian, she remains conflicted about her feelings toward Abdul. This conflict helps form the basis for an erotic and nuanced love triangle as her involvement with Abdul deepens.

PACIFIC BOOK REVIW:

"In a world divided by the atrocities of war, it is matters of the heart that almost bring down our heroine, Maya, in this fast-moving and suspenseful sequel to Last Call for Caviar. The subject matter in volume 2 is much darker than the first novel. I did, however like the premise that even during the darkest of times for our society, individuals still have individual lives, loves and desires for the future, whatever that might be. It tests the strength and endurance of our heroine, Maya, and driven by desire and love, she passes the test with flying colors.

Speaking of desire and love, this novel is full of it. While the world is more dangerous and hopeless, the sex is more passionate and alive. Maya Rising is a sensual, erotic read that doesn't disappoint. Maya Rising is a very well-written, thought-provoking follow up volume for the series."--Pacific Book Review (4Stars)

READERS' FAVORITES:

"Roen did a fantastic job of creating a scary world that is all too plausible in its reality. Maya is a kick-butt kind of heroine that a lot of readers will get behind, and they will love her cunning and street smarts, and her strong sense of loyalty to friends and family. She's a different girl from the one she was when she started this journey, and she isn't about to give up just because the world has gone crazy around her. I wanted her to get the happiness she deserved and for things to work out for her. That level of empathy for a character is remarkable and makes me applaud Roen for a fine job of making her characters come to life."--JJ Philipsfor Readers' Favorites (5 Stars)

"Maya Rising is a sizzling steamy story with action, adventure and intrigue. Maya is a strong heroine. She is well-written and easy to root for.  Roen wrote characters into this world with the toughness and fortitude to survive. Maya Rising is a survival tale, but hope is also encountered in the story's pages. I love the way this story was told. It is dark and scary at times, funny and witty when comic relief is needed, and sweet and sappy just when I've had too much darkness. Roen did a really good job of balancing the elements of her story."--Anna Smithfor Readers' Favorites (5 Stars)

SAN FRANCISCO BOOK REVIEW:"Roen has grown into her craft, filling Maya Rising with tighter writing and raised stakes. It is an apocalyptic thriller that is sure to keep fans of Last Call for Caviar at the edge of their seats and hungey for more."--San Francisco Book Review.

MANHATTAN BOOK REVIEW:"The sequel to Last Call for Caviar is equally as delicious as the first installment. Maya Rising jumps right into the action and doesn't let up. The plot winds through the French countryside and back down to the French Riviera, coming full circle. Maya is forced to face the demons that have hounded her steps throughout book volumes. The earth trembles with a mystical power that haunts Maya. The mysteries of this force seems to hold her destiny in its grip and the blazing red eye of the Purifier scorches. Always one step away from the end, Maya Jade is on an unrelenting journey toward her truth and the fate of the world.A fast paced whirl of adventure, hurdling towards a conclusion that will keep you guessing to the end. I implore Roen to reconsider, and serve us at least one more serving of Caviar."--Manhattan Book Review
