The second instalment of ‘Rambling Nonsense’ begins in Chennai in the south-east, and travels up the west coast, before heading into the hinterland of the north and crossing into Nepal. In addition to useful words and phrases in Hindi, my tale also include greetings in the languages of the south. My travels re-visit periods of history, heroes and villains, and religious beliefs that captured my attention in the north, in addition to colourful characters such as the Tiger Sultan of Mysore, and an introduction to Buddhism and Christianity in India. Obvious differences between north and south are commented upon, including the fact that Bollywood was not my guide in the south, since the southern states are the lands of Kollywood, Tollywood, and Mollywood. My route up the west coast also visits, and introduces the reader to the Portuguese enclaves of Goa, Bombay and Bassein. As a continuation of my circle of India, ‘Paradise Lost’ includes sites (and sights) worth visiting, as well as pitfalls, predators, and pearls encountered along the way.
