Through a near miracle, and mostly because of the unique magic controlled by the Young Mage NikNik, the humans have come out on top of their first string of encounters with the ancient human enemy, the Sor'ee. The large force that had invaded the lands around the ancient capital of Cha'pol have been eliminated. But the war is clearly not over. The Matdavian Oracles have promised as much as two years before the fearsome Sor'ee would return after the devastating defeat they have suffered at the hands of NikNik. But is is barely more than half that long when the surprise attack comes, with devastating results. Arif, Bhdl, and the others members of the group who have embarked on the long journey to the southern lands to raise an army of Mages and guardsmen are called to return to Ausfaria as soon as possible. Yahfe fears the forces at Mel'ton might be overrun before that can happen. After returning to Mel'ton, where the new fortress sits on the land formerly occupied by the ruins of the ancient village, they make preparations to take the war to the home of the Sor'ee which has been located by Ko'lat, Arif's Nys'as friend. Unfortunately, their plans do not go precisely as hoped. The Sor'ee soon prove themselves more intelligent, technologically advanced, and prepared for the battle to come than the humans expect. The fading magic also complicates every effort to confront the enemy, and the human forces find themselves on the losing end of too many of the encounters. Several unplanned discoveries provide key insights to guide the humans, including Bhdl's discovery of the magical brand that will alter the balance of power in the conflict. The problem that remains is how, short of complete annihilation, can a permanent solution to be found to the Sor'ee and their kind?
