This book has been written as a general-interest manual for anyone wishing to know all about what must be one of the most versatile and widely-used natural resources available in the world. With its uses through the ages ranging from footwear to furniture, from drinking vessels to book bindings, leather (essentially a by-product of the meat industry), in all its forms and finishes is one of the most interesting of manufacturing materials. L for Leather takes the reader through the history and applications of the material, how leather used to be, and still is, manufactured on both small and industrial scales, and the range of leather types, including some very unusual and exotic, along with the various finishes, that make this material so widely used and appreciated. Also included are discussions about the environmental impacts of the leather industry as well as issues of animal welfare, and the question is asked as to whether the industry actually deserves the bad press that it frequently gets. Finally, after reviewing the various perceptions of leather quality, the book finishes with a guide for those people tasked with buying this unique material and items made from leather, whether as hobbyists or as buyers for small to medium-sized commercial enterprises. An ideal handbook for students, designers, manufacturers, retailers, or anyone interested in the material, L for Leather is richly illustrated with line diagrams, charts and photographs, most of which were specially commissioned for this book.
