9781517660710: The Greatest Leader He Ever Saw: A story of character-based leadership

Stuart Holbrook is the arrogant, ignorant, and selfish billionaire owner of a professional baseball team and many other companies. Showcased in publications such as Forbes, Fortune, and the Financial Times, he has everything in life he could want. But he is a terrible leader, neither liked nor respected by those around him.

Despite his privileges, the one person he most wants to be like is Todd Ferragamo, the aging captain of his big league team. Stuart learns how Todd treats those around him with dignity, from the cleaning staff in the clubhouse to the vendors in the stadium and the crew maintaining the impeccable field. In short, Todd is the greatest leader Stuart Holbrook has ever seen.

So Stuart sets out to discover what makes Todd so effective. What results is a profound transformation in character as Stuart uncovers the qualities of integrity, humility, and treating others with dignity—the foundations of character-based leadership.

For fans of The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, The Greatest Leader He Ever Saw is a remarkable fable about leading from within.

From the Author:

I have spent many years all over the world and in the United States as an executive, a business owner, and a consultant to many companies.   The result of all this is my own personal journey, where my learning is still far from over.  We all continue to have so much to learn.   I have studies and observed leadership for a number of years now.  I guess you could say it is my "practice," just as doctors become more expert in their medical practices and specialty areas.

So, in my years as a corporate executive and work with, managing, developing and coaching staff members and leaders, I have come to realize that leadership starts with certain fundamentals.  Those fundamentals are based on character.  I don't care if a leader has a great vision, or if a leader excels in a variety of "competencies" that the HR world seems to be consumed with.

As a well-known thought leader, Peter Senge, once said, "I don't care what the vision is; it is what the vision does."  I am more concerned that a leader can make things happen while doing so with integrity.

Integrity.  The is where character comes in.

In my humble and simplistic view, leadership is about achieving results consistently and doing so with integrity.    This story is about the integrity part.  I call it "character-based leadership," which is about the quality of one's character.  I have come to believe that integrity, humility, and treating people with dignity are the foundations of character-based leaders.

I hope you find this book practical and not at all conceptual, and I hope you find the story inspirational.   At the end of the book, I summarized the 25 character-based leadership lessons which appeared in the story.

From the Back Cover:

A selfish billionaire learns the importance of integrity, character, and leading from within.

Stuart Holbrook is the successful-- and arrogant---owner of numerous businesses including a professional baseball team.  He has everything he wants, except the intangible leadership qualities he sees in his aging reserve player and captain, Todd Ferragamo.

Inspired by how effective and respected Todd is, Stuart sets out to uncover exactly what makes Todd a leadership everyone respects.   What Stuart discovers is nothing short of life-changing--and results in a profound transformation in personality, leadership, and humility.

A fable full of valuable and practical life lessons, The Greatest Leader He Ever Saw is the dramatic story of one man's conversion from egotistical boss to selfless leader as he learns the importance of character-based leadership founded on values and treating people with dignity.
