This lively memoir begins when an idealistic American woman, weary from a year of cancer treatments, takes a leap from the cozy bubble of Portland, Oregon to the raw and wild bushveld of South Africa. A chance meeting with six grandmothers from a rural weaving cooperative launches the unexpected next chapter of her life as she and the women join forces to face the challenges of poverty,  AIDS, and the lingering post-apartheid oppression of women in a small rural village.

From the Inside Flap:

Judy Miller was looking for something.  A year of cancer treatments had sparked a fiery determination to find and live her purpose, whatever that turned out to be. Hand Spun Hope is the  story of her decade long collaboration with the women of the Mapusha Weaving Cooperative in rural South Africa.  Nourished by the land and inspired by the strength of the women, Judy jumps headlong into this foreign world filled with tribal hierarchies, cultural tabus, and the occasional deadly snake. As she and the women gradually build bonds of trust, they embark together on a journey that changes all of their lives. Judy's infectious optimism and dogged determination will renew your faith in the power of one person to make a difference. This is a story of love, and the village of Rooiboklagte will never be the same.

About the Author:

Judy Miller has been writing the stories of her world since she was a young girl in a private girls' school in Philadelphia. After receiving an honors degree in English Literature from Boston University and a degree in textile design from the Philadelphia College of Textile and Science, she taught art and exhibited her fiber sculptures in Boston and the New England area. A move to Portland, Oregon in 1984 gave her the opportunity to pursue her interests in yoga, meditation and counseling before becoming a community developer in the community of Rooiboklaagte in 2003.  Judy wrote this book to inspire others to take their own leaps of courage and learn what can be accomplished when armed with the enormous power of hope. She currently resides in Portland Oregon where she counsels, writes, speaks and continues her work with the Mapusha Cooperative.
