An often comical story of coming of age after Fundamentalism: The daughter of the adulterous and egocentric Evangelist. George Jovian, and a graduate of the strict and repressive Greater Independent Baptist College, Grace Jovian is determined to strike out on her own. Grace, a conscientious and yet cynical Christian young woman, has been shocked and haunted by the revelations that her evangelist father has had multiple affairs. The secret corruption of Christian Fundamentalism has sent her searching for true religion. But Grace hasn't plumbed the depths of depravity hidden behind the pulpits of the Independent Baptists.

In a story that is often comic and often stark with the realities of coming to terms with life outside of her religion's insularity and secrecy, Grace encounters kind friends everywhere: a courteous and warm hearted rationalist who makes her his protege, a former actress now living in obscurity who rescues her from danger, an African American Christian who gently reveals to her the decades of racism in Fundamentalism.

But she also encounters the dangers of a young woman living alone, including a church deacon who stalks her, and a pastor who dismisses her pleas for help. Grace's many adventures are sometimes colored by her anger, but never by bitterness. And on her journey she discovers that she is not the weak and helpless female that she has been told she is. Instead, she is smart, professional, and full of determination to be a decent person.

About the Author:

Jeri Massi is a graduate of Bob Jones University and a well known blogger and victim's advocate for survivors of abuse in Christian Fundamentalism. For years she ran the Recovering Fundamentalists podcast that offered both comedy and insight to young people exiting Fundamentalism. A devout Christian, she is also the author of Secret Radio, the first in the series of books about Grace Jovian.

Review:

From Don Elbourne, Locusts and Wild Honey blog: "In the opening scene of A Standard Christian we see the blossoming wild side of Grace. Jeri assures readers that missing [Secret Radio, the first novel in the series] will not detract from following the ensuing narrative...I look forward to watching A Standard Christian unfold and seeing Grace mature in the coming days."

Cindy Swanson, from Notes in the Key of Life writes, "A Standard Christian takes up the tale of Grace Jovian, who has just graduated from Bible college and now must face the real world. I've read the first two installments, and am hooked again already.
"Although Jeri doesn't shrink from skewering religious hypocrisy in her writings, her message of true faith and genuine Christianity comes through loud and clear."

From Ingrid Schlueter, "Jeri has helped me put in perspective what I have seen for years in fundamentalism. I also appreciate that she puts some characters in her book within fundamentalism that aren't like the rest. It shows that God works, even in dark places, and that His grace can find us even in the midst of unbiblical teachings."

From Violet Nesdoly: "Get hooked on ... A Standard Christian which is Grace Jovian's (A.K.A. Jeri Massi) sequel to Secret Radio. (The story stands alone.)

  • Will Grace sell another Persian rug?
  • What's behind store owner Mr. Simpson's personal attentions?
  • And will she ever escape from the shadow of her old alma mater GIBC (Greater Independent Baptist College) and its henchmen, Preacher Dirk Pole, Preacher Rush Pole, Preacher Rob Lavendar, Preacher Lee T. Stone, evangelists Al L. Mee and her own father George Jovian?
