This novel is about a young man named Olaf Peterson leaving Sweden at age 18. He had no thoughts other than getting a job as a logger in Canada. What that simple event brought about is the basis for this story. Even though characters are fictional most locations mentioned are real and can be located on maps.

Rudy Thompson was born October 28, 1912 in Western Oregon, a first generation American. His parents were from Norway. He grew up in a rural environment and was involved at various times with lumber and timber occupations as well as dairy farming, work in Oregon’s salmon hatcheries, commercial fishing and merchant marine. For a time he was a clerk in a hardware and sporting goods store. After serving five years in US Navy during WWII, GI Bill paid for Industrial Arts teacher training at Oregon State. Rudy retired from teaching in California in 1973. He married the love of his life near the end of WWII and has one son. Rudy lost his wife after sixty two years of marriage and now lives in Grass Valley, CA.
