Allan Mottus was raised on the Eastern End of Long Island and attended schools in Westhampton Beach. His father's family bought a duck farm in Eastport in the early 1920s, which Mottus said, "made us summer people as most of my friends' families settled there in the late 17th or early 18th Centuries." He said that in the 1950s and 1960s, the area had not joined the so-called Hamptons, as it was still rural, populated by farmers, fishermen and trades people. "I painted the area as I remembered, and the poetry celebrates an innocence and memories I wanted to share."
