In the Gardens of Goldmere follows the story of a group of urchins, foreigner soldiers, a prince and a failed cultist whose paths interweave as they become embroiled in a plot that threatens to tear the city apart. Sham feels the need to enjoy one last summer before the responsibilities of adulthood confine her to a life of toil. She demands her friends accompany her in the season of their last adventure. Prince Marc wants to be left alone to spend his days reading. His teacher forces him out of his home to befriend some youths of the city. Not knowing who he is, Sham and her friends take him in, and he learns of a childhood he never got to experience. The Third Army sent Aule and Corper to Goldmere as saboteurs, but as tensions mount between them, they must reconcile themselves with the monsters they've become in service to their generals. Mirry succumbed to self-pity and misanthropy and turned to the dark arts in hopes of calling forth a demon of immense power. Unable to fully commit himself to the sacrifices of the ritual, it fails and leaves him with a demon strong enough to destroy a town but containing all the innocence of a pure child. If he hopes to achieve the power of his dreams, Mirry must teach his demonic servant the reality of the world and why he must kill.
