“He’s found us!” That’s not what eleven-year-old Trevor Tate expects his mom to say when she gets his third suspension notice in three months. He doesn’t expect a robotic tentacle to shoot out of the bathtub and drag her through an otherworldly portal, either. Now to rescue Mom, Trevor must follow her to Nil – a world of giant bugs, monstrous machines and a disturbing lack of working toilets. Then there are the Dark Crows, an army of superkids who think Trevor is a legendary champion sent to save them from the tyrannical teens. To Trevor, whose short temper has always branded him a bully, the idea that he could be anyone’s knight in shining armor is a pipe-dream. But while rescuing Mom, he uncovers a secret about his past that will forever tip the balance between the villain he was, and the hero he was meant to be.

Jessica Rising has been writing her whole life, starting with a series of stapler-bound books titled “Lucille and Benji” when she was five years old. Since then she’s been published in newspapers as well as various anthologies and magazines, but her heart and soul has always been in her children’s books. Currently she is working on the third book of her middle grade science fiction trilogy, “Guts and Glory, Freedom Fighters of Nil”, titled Rise of the Abysmal Numbots, and book 1 of her very first young adult dystopia, titled Blight. She also has two middle grade fantasy series — “Tipani Walker and the Nightmare Club” and “Seasons and Solstices” — in the works as long-term projects. Jessica graduated in 2006 with honors from UI&U with a B.A. in Film, and again in 2013 with a Master of Arts in Writing and Literature for Children. Along with her membership in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), she also belongs to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the Modern Language Association (MLA). By day, Jessica teaches college composition and volunteers at Spocon — her hometown annual science fiction and fantasy convention — as their Head Literature Ambassador. She is also a wife and mother of five. She loves to read and write, sing karaoke, go camping with her family, and is an avid fan of British television, especially Monty Python, “Blackadder” and “Dr. Who”.
